There are two botanical gardens in Chandigarh — one in Punjab University and another between the Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake in Sector 1. Both are here to conserve the flora of the region as well as exotic and near-extinct species. The one near the Rock Garden is spread on 88 acres and consists of 15 botanical sections, one dedicated to a medicinal plants garden with 75+ species of medicinal trees and 55 species of medicinal herbs. It is also connected to a nature reserve called Patiala-ki-Rao through a causeway.
